Vesuvius in Pompeii, Italy, blew its top on August 24, 16 A.D. . The volcano showered Pompeii with tons of tephra, such as dust, ash, and pumice. The town of Hurculainem was bathed in lava and pyroplastic flows. Citizens wondered why they did'nt
see it coming.Even the farmers on Vesuvius did'nt know the mountain would blow its top.
In the afternoon of August 24, 16 A.D. , Vesuvius rumbled to life. The ground shook violently, then the mountain erupted.Tephra came flying out of the mountain and began to bury Pompeii. 200 yards away, in Herculainem, lava and pyroplastic flows hurtled towards the city and began to engulf it. Pompeii was buried in 6 to 20 ft of pumice, dust, and ash.
The people who survived the eruption of Vesuvius and had fled the cities came back to scavenge for treasures. Said one little boy,"I'm worried about my dog. He was chained to a post. I hope someone set him free." A preist from one of the temples said," That stupid mountain ruined my temple. I hope the gods destroy Vesuvius." A soothsayer gave us this information" weeks before the eruption, the birds and mice left. The canals dried up, and the ground started to shake." You'd think the people of Pompeii and Hurculainem could take a hint.
The people of Pompeii provided us with this information about Vesuvius:
1. It is a cinder cone volcano.
2. It can give off pyroplastic flows
3. It has rhyolitic magma,70% Si02, very viscious
4. It is an active volcano
The people of Pompeii have suffered from Vesuvius's eruption. Many people were caught as they tried to escape. They are now buried under ash and lava. Hopefully the people of Pompeii will never experience anything like this again.

BIBLIOGRAPHY

Mary P.
